Al Green

I used to ask Spencer, youngest son, if I sounded like Al Green when I sang along to Al Green's Greatest Hits cd on family road trips.

O yeah Dad, Spencer would say.

I knew he didn't mean it, that I sounded like a middle-aged white guy trying to sound like Al Green.

I must have known that there was something beneficial for the relationship between Spencer and I for him to be able to say that I really didn't sound like Al Green.

So I kept on singing like Al Green and asking Spencer if I sounded like him, and Spencer kept on saying, o yeah Dad.

Those were the days.

Last night I left my sandals on the front porch of the house in San Francisco.

I must have known that when I went out in the morning to bring them inside that there'd be a trace of rainwater in the right sandal.

Some of the most beautiful images in the world are underwater, where all life begins.
