Drinking from a chipped ceramic cup

It's weird what music gets stuck in your head!

Walking down a street where you used to live a memory becomes a song, and then another song and so forth until the late 1960's and early 70's becomes the hit parade of your private life when you were young and The Environmental Protection Agency was a gleam in Richard Nixon's eye.

Richard Brautigan is at the top of the best-seller list but drinks too much and ends poorly. A man who wrote, "All of us have a place in history. Mine is clouds" can't be all bad and is due for critical reappraisal.

The past too--as represented by the arcane popularity of t-shirt shops on the boardwalk at Venice Beach and nostalgic gatherings like Burning Man--is the movie that they said would be made of your life when it was popular to think of one's life as a movie.

It turns out that all the best movies are made by people already dead. So I made one myself yesterday with the understanding that all the best movies are made by people who are still living about people who may or may not be dead.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida.
